The prescribed work

  1. For the plenary grant, pray in a church or oratory, as a family, in a religious community or association of the faithful, or with others gathered for a worthy purpose.
  2. For the plenary grant, recite five decades consecutively, joining vocal prayer to meditation on the mysteries.
  3. For the plenary grant, in public recitation announce the mysteries according to approved local custom; in private recitation, meditation alongside the vocal prayers suffices.

The work and its conditions

A plenary indulgence also requires complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, subject to the grant’s stated exceptions. The ordinary limit is one plenary indulgence per day.

Conditions common to every indulgence

The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.

Read the full conditions and norms. The cited grant and its specific provisions govern.

Time required

Read each branch with its own conditions. An editorial estimate is not a prescribed minimum.

Plenary: five consecutive decades

Editorial estimate

About 15–30 minutes for five decades

No fixed minute minimum is prescribed. Five consecutive decades, vocal prayer and meditation are required for plenary, along with a qualifying setting. The range is an editorial estimate; longer meditation can take more time.

Partial: recitation in other circumstances

Editorial estimate

About 15–30 minutes for a five-decade Rosary

No fixed minute minimum is prescribed. This estimate describes five decades recited outside the plenary settings; it is not a new legal minimum for the partial grant.
