How the estimate was made

Reading the displayed guide and its once-printed formulas at 100–160 words per minute. Repeated prayers are not fully written out, so this is not the time to pray the Rosary.

Estimated five-decade vocal core 15–26 minutes

How the vocal prayer estimate was made

Five decades: 5 Our Fathers, 50 Hail Marys and 5 Glory Bes, counted from this library’s traditional English readers at 100–160 words/minute.

The guide-reading estimate counts the displayed directions and once-printed formulas. The vocal prayer estimate counts the repeated five-decade core in the selected language; meditation, pauses and customary opening or closing prayers add time. None of these estimates is an ecclesiastical minimum.

Praying five decades Choose one set of five mysteries below. For each mystery, pray one Our Father, ten Hail Marys and one Glory Be while contemplating that mystery. Continue through all five decades. In public recitation, announce the mysteries according to the approved local custom; in private recitation, meditation on the mysteries suffices. For the plenary Rosary grant, the five decades are recited continuously with meditation in a qualifying setting, together with the other conditions of concession 17. A prayer book, beads or a printed list cannot replace that meditation. Customary opening and conclusion Many Catholics begin with the Sign of the Cross, the Apostles’ Creed, one Our Father, three Hail Marys and one Glory Be. After the five decades, they pray the Hail, Holy Queen and make the Sign of the Cross. These introductory and concluding customs are distinct from the five-decade core specified by the indulgence grant. The Fatima prayer and other customary additions are not additional conditions of that grant. Mystery sets Joyful — commonly Monday and Saturday 1. The Annunciation 2. The Visitation 3. The Birth of Jesus 4. The Presentation in the Temple 5. The Finding of Jesus in the Temple Luminous — commonly Thursday 1. The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan 2. The Wedding at Cana 3. The Proclamation of the Kingdom and the Call to Conversion 4. The Transfiguration 5. The Institution of the Eucharist Sorrowful — commonly Tuesday and Friday 1. The Agony in the Garden 2. The Scourging at the Pillar 3. The Crowning with Thorns 4. The Carrying of the Cross 5. The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus Glorious — commonly Wednesday and Sunday 1. The Resurrection 2. The Ascension 3. The Descent of the Holy Spirit 4. The Assumption of Mary 5. The Coronation of Mary The customary day assignments allow pastoral and seasonal variation; they are not extra indulgence conditions. Prayer texts The repeated formulas are printed once here. Follow the repetition counts above for the complete five decades. Sign of the Cross In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified; died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Our Father Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name: Thy kingdom come: Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil. Amen. Hail Mary Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Glory Be Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Hail, Holy Queen Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, Hail our Life, our Sweetness, and our Hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn, then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed Fruit of thy womb, Jesus, O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
