The prescribed work

  1. Be unable for a serious reason to attend one of the three appointed cathedral celebrations. The notice gives examples including cloistered religious, older or sick people, prisoners and healthcare workers.
  2. Either participate through the live online broadcast of that celebration; or unite spiritually with those attending, recite the Our Father, Creed and diocesan 80th-anniversary prayer at home or where impeded, and offer personal suffering or life’s labours to God.
  3. Fulfil the usual plenary conditions, including complete detachment from sin. The Chancery specifically directs confession within three weeks before or after the work, Communion during Mass, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions (an Our Father and Hail Mary may fulfil that prayer).
  4. This provision concerns the three appointed celebrations; it does not create an unrestricted daily remote visit. The notice does not expressly defer the sacramental conditions.

The work and its conditions

A plenary indulgence also requires complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, subject to the grant’s stated exceptions. The ordinary limit is one plenary indulgence per day.

Conditions common to every indulgence

The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.

Read the full conditions and norms. The cited grant and its specific provisions govern.
