The prescribed work
- Devoutly participate in a sacred function, or pray at least the Our Father and a Creed in the cathedral.
The work and its conditions
A plenary indulgence also requires complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, subject to the grant’s stated exceptions. The ordinary limit is one plenary indulgence per day.
Conditions common to every indulgence
The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.
Read the full conditions and norms. The cited grant and its specific provisions govern.
Time required
Read each branch with its own conditions. An editorial estimate is not a prescribed minimum.
Visit with the required prayers
Editorial estimate
About 2–10 minutes for the visit’s prayers
No fixed minute minimum is prescribed. This is an editorial estimate for the Our Father and the prescribed Creed with a brief devout visit; annual or feast-day limits are frequency restrictions.

Occasion and source notes
Use the date named in the cathedral’s rescript; check local observance where a feast is transferred. Under Norm14, this day-attached church visit may begin at noon on the preceding day and continue until midnight closing the qualifying day. The preceding date is not an all-day window; the actual grant conditions and legitimate observance remain applicable.
The signed Latin decree asks for the Our Father and a profession of faith (Symbolum Fidei), without specifying the Nicene form. The cathedral’s English translation uses the wording “Nicene Creed”. Participation in a sacred function is the decree’s alternative to these prayers.
Prayer texts and resources
Follow the prayer count and formula specified in the requirements. The two Creed readers are alternatives.
