Saint Mary Major spiritual-affiliation privileges
Saint Mary Major affiliation: a chosen annual day
Visit a formally affiliated shrine, church or chapel on the specified occasion, under its Apostolic Penitentiary rescript.
Time required No fixed duration; consult the local rescript and service schedule
- When
- Once a year on a personally chosen day
- Where
- A shrine, church or chapel formally affiliated to the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major and covered by its Apostolic Penitentiary rescript
- Who
- All eligible faithful
- Application
- Self or the departed
The prescribed work
- For an affiliated shrine, church or chapel, verify its formal affiliation and Apostolic Penitentiary rescript, and follow that rescript’s terms.
- Follow the devotional work in the local rescript. General basilica guidance specifies sacred services and Our Father/Creed; some rescripts expressly allow a sacred celebration OR those prayers (for example, Tindari).
The work and its conditions
A plenary indulgence also requires complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, subject to the grant’s stated exceptions. The ordinary limit is one plenary indulgence per day.
Conditions common to every indulgence
The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.
Read the full conditions and norms. The cited grant and its specific provisions govern.
Time required
Read each branch with its own conditions. An editorial estimate is not a prescribed minimum.
Work specified in the affiliated church’s own rescript
Duration varies
No fixed duration; consult the local rescript and service schedule
No general minute minimum is prescribed. The own rescript determines whether sacred services are required or a prayer-visit alternative is permitted. A brief prayer estimate cannot be applied to every affiliated church. Include any pilgrimage activity that the particular rescript requires; ordinary travel to reach it is separate.
What the time estimate excludes
- Ordinary travel to and from the venue, and waiting outside the prescribed work
- Preparation and the ordinary conditions for a plenary indulgence, unless they are themselves part of the prescribed work
Occasion and source notes
Apply the particular church’s rescript and local liturgical calendar.
The general guidance summarizes the affiliation system. The church’s own Apostolic Penitentiary rescript controls its exact conditions; Tindari’s published rescript expressly permits a sacred celebration or the two prayers.
Prayer texts and resources
Follow the prayer count and formula specified in the requirements. The two Creed readers are alternatives.
