- Visit Knock Shrine in person on 21 August, the anniversary of the apparition.
- Recite the Our Father and Creed at the shrine.
- Fulfil the usual plenary conditions. The current shrine booklet directs an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be for the Pope’s intentions.
The work and its conditions
A plenary indulgence also requires complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, subject to the grant’s stated exceptions. The ordinary limit is one plenary indulgence per day.
Conditions common to every indulgence
The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.
Read the full conditions and norms. The cited grant and its specific provisions govern.
Time required
Read each branch with its own conditions. An editorial estimate is not a prescribed minimum.
Anniversary visit and prayers
Editorial estimate
About 3–6 minutes for the devout visit and listed prayers
No fixed minute minimum is prescribed. This editorial estimate covers a brief devout visit, Our Father and Creed, and the three prayers for the Pope’s intentions named in the current booklet. It does not estimate other optional pilgrimage activities.
What the time estimate excludes
- Ordinary travel to and from the venue, and waiting outside the prescribed work
- Preparation, sacramental confession and Eucharistic Communion
Occasion and source notes
The current booklet distinguishes this fixed apparition anniversary from the liturgical feast of Our Lady of Knock on 17 August. The preceding-noon opening shown here applies to the visit and required prayers made in an actual church or oratory at the shrine, such as the documented parish church or basilica. It is not a promise that a grounds-only visit receives this extension. Follow the shrine’s access hours and competent directions.
The current institutional directions are followed here. The shrine’s 1970 Annual expressly attributes the visit grant to an Apostolic Penitentiary rescript; the original rescript’s date and complete term were not retrieved. No claim of an expressly perpetual term is made. The titular feast and annual chosen-day routes are already indexed under the universal shrine grant.
Prayer texts and resources
