The prescribed work

  1. Go to the sanctuary in a sacred pilgrimage, personally or with a group; complete the devout church visit as part of that pilgrimage.
  2. During the church visit, recite the Our Father and the Creed, following the common norm for a plenary church visit.
  3. Fulfill the usual plenary conditions: complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion and prayer for the Pope’s intentions.

The work and its conditions

A plenary indulgence also requires complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, subject to the grant’s stated exceptions. The ordinary limit is one plenary indulgence per day.

Conditions common to every indulgence

The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.

Read the full conditions and norms. The cited grant and its specific provisions govern.

Time required

Read each branch with its own conditions. An editorial estimate is not a prescribed minimum.

Sacred pilgrimage and church visit

Duration varies

Duration varies; no numeric minimum prescribed

The actual pilgrimage and visit must be completed; a brief prayer by itself does not substitute for the pilgrimage.

Timing sources
What the time estimate excludes
  • Ordinary travel to and from the venue and waiting outside the prescribed work; an actual sacred pilgrimage remains part of the work when required.
  • Separate fulfillment of the usual plenary conditions, except prayers expressly included in the branch.
Editorial review due

Occasion and source notes

Documented availability in this library begins 13 March 2026. This marks the period supported by the reviewed evidence, not an independently established legal commencement date.

The sanctuary’s current official notice identifies the Apostolic Penitentiary and protocol and supplies the ordinary visit occasions. It does not publish an expiration date or reproduce the signed rescript. The displayed review deadline, 13 March 2027, is this library’s editorial recheck one year after the notice, not a stated legal expiration. No perpetual term or exact legal commencement date is inferred. The notice also mentions an impeded-person extension, whose complete prescribed work remains unverified and is not included in this route. The library begins documented availability on the notice’s publication date to avoid projecting this renewed concession into earlier years.

Prayer texts and resources

Follow the prayer count and formula specified in the requirements. The two Creed readers are alternatives.
