The prescribed work
- Devoutly visit the Shrine of Jesus the Divine Mercy in Clinton Township, Michigan, on one of the four eligible occasions.
- Either participate in the solemn rites there, or spend a suitable time in pious meditation and conclude with the Our Father, the Creed and invocations to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
- Fulfill the usual plenary conditions: sacramental confession, Holy Communion, prayer for the Pope’s intentions and complete detachment from all sin.
The work and its conditions
A plenary indulgence also requires complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, subject to the grant’s stated exceptions. The ordinary limit is one plenary indulgence per day.
Conditions common to every indulgence
The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.
Read the full conditions and norms. The cited grant and its specific provisions govern.
Time required
Read each branch with its own conditions. An editorial estimate is not a prescribed minimum.
Suitable meditation during the pilgrimage visit
Duration varies
Suitable time for pious meditation, followed by the required prayers
No fixed number of minutes is specified. The Our Father, Creed and Marian invocations are concluding prayers, not a substitute for the required suitable meditation.

Occasion and source notes
Documented availability in this library begins 30 November 2022. This marks the period supported by the reviewed evidence, not an independently established legal commencement date.
The preceding-noon opening shown here applies to the prescribed visit made in the shrine’s oratory, identified by the archdiocese’s official publication. The shrine also includes outdoor grounds; this rule is not automatically extended to a grounds-only visit. The solemn-rites alternative requires actual participation in the applicable celebration. Follow any lawful local transfer, specific decree provision and shrine access hours.
The 2023 archdiocesan account attributes all four occasions to the same 30 November 2022 decree, and the current archdiocesan directory continues to attest the shrine’s Penitentiary concession while highlighting December 8. Including the four occasions relies on that continuing institutional attestation, not on treating the directory’s silence about the other three as a restriction. The complete rescript and its duration clause remain unrecovered; no perpetual term or invented legal expiry is asserted. The displayed evidence start is the date of the reviewed decree.
