Standing annual Pardon of Assisi, confirmed by the Order of Friars Minor
Pardon of Assisi: visit a Franciscan church
The Franciscan Order confirms the annual Pardon of Assisi in Franciscan churches worldwide, including those which are not parish churches.
Time required Participation in Mass, Communion and the devout church visit; duration varies.
- When
- The annual observance runs from noon on 1 August through midnight on 2 August.
- Where
- Franciscan churches throughout the world. Parish churches are separately covered by the universal parish-church grant.
- Who
- All the faithful visiting a qualifying church; Franciscan membership is not required.
- Application
- Self or the departed
The prescribed work
- Devoutly visit a Franciscan church for the annual observance and recite the Creed and Our Father.
- The OFM instructions include participation at Mass and Eucharistic Communion.
- Fulfill the usual plenary conditions: confession, Communion, prayer for the Pope’s intentions, and complete detachment from sin.
The work and its conditions
A plenary indulgence also requires complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, subject to the grant’s stated exceptions. The ordinary limit is one plenary indulgence per day.
Conditions common to every indulgence
The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.
Read the full conditions and norms. The cited grant and its specific provisions govern.
Time required
Read each branch with its own conditions. An editorial estimate is not a prescribed minimum.
Mass and annual Franciscan-church visit with Our Father and Creed
Complete the prescribed event
Mass and church visit; duration varies
The OFM instructions include Mass and Communion as well as the visit and prayers. No fixed number of minutes is prescribed; the observance’s calendar window is not a continuous attendance requirement.
What the time estimate excludes
- Ordinary travel to and from the venue, and waiting outside the prescribed work
- Separate fulfillment of the usual plenary conditions, except prayers or Mass expressly included in the branch.
- The confession window is a condition-timing matter, not the work’s duration.
Occasion and source notes
The Order’s current instructions expressly begin this church-visit observance at noon on 1 August; that preceding date is not available for the whole day. Follow the church’s announced observance; the ordinary limit on plenary indulgences applies.
The cited OFM instructions specify confession within eight days before or after. This source-specific timing is preserved rather than silently replaced by the general approximately twenty-day guidance; consult the church or confessor about timing. The 2024 article reports a recurring observance, not a new 2024 rescript.
Prayer texts and resources
Follow the prayer count and formula specified in the requirements. The two Creed readers are alternatives.
