Enchiridion · Grant 33 §1, 2° (b)
Minor basilica on its titular feast
Devoutly visit the minor basilica on this qualifying occasion. Pray the Our Father and Creed, or participate in a sacred rite under the parallel Domus Ecclesiae provision.
Time required No fixed minimum; prayer visit about 2–10 minutes; the sacred-rite alternative follows the rite’s duration.
- When
- The solemnity of the basilica’s titular, or another day appointed by the local Ordinary for the good of the faithful
- Where
- A minor basilica
- Who
- All eligible faithful
- Application
- Self or the departed
The prescribed work
- Visit the qualifying sacred place.
- Pray the Our Father and Creed during the visit (Enchiridion 33). On an occasion covered by Domus Ecclesiae IV.2, participation in a sacred rite is an alternative.
The work and its conditions
A plenary indulgence also requires complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, subject to the grant’s stated exceptions. The ordinary limit is one plenary indulgence per day.
Conditions common to every indulgence
The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.
Read the full conditions and norms. The cited grant and its specific provisions govern.
Time required
Read each branch with its own conditions. An editorial estimate is not a prescribed minimum.
Devout visit with Our Father and Creed
Editorial estimate
About 2–10 minutes for the visit’s prayers
No fixed minute minimum is prescribed. The range is an editorial allowance for the specified prayers and a brief devout visit; travel, processions and a group pilgrimage’s overall itinerary are separate. Date limits and once-a-year or once-per-event limits are frequency restrictions, not time spent praying.
Alternative under Domus Ecclesiae: sacred rite
Complete the prescribed event
Length of the sacred rite
No fixed minute minimum is prescribed. Where using the Domus Ecclesiae alternative, participate in the rite itself; the short prayer-visit estimate does not describe this branch.
What the time estimate excludes
- Ordinary travel to and from the venue, and waiting outside the prescribed work
- Preparation and the ordinary conditions for a plenary indulgence, unless they are themselves part of the prescribed work
Occasion and source notes
Grant 33 footnote 63 permits this Enchiridion visit-and-prayer indulgence on the stated day or on another day appointed by the local Ordinary for the good of the faithful. An alternative date requires that appointment and is not chosen independently by a visitor.
Domus Ecclesiae (9 November 1989), IV.2 provides a parallel sacred-rite alternative on this same occasion. The calendar privilege is not an additional indulgence on the same day. The Ordinary-appointed alternative under Enchiridion footnote 63 concerns the visit-and-prayer route; a parallel sacred-rite privilege must have its own applicable occasion.
