The prescribed work

  1. Make a pilgrimage to the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart; there participate devoutly in jubilee rites or spend suitable time in pious reflection, prayer or another work of Christian devotion for God’s glory.
  2. For the prayer alternative, pray for peace and harmony among peoples in response to the errors of the present age; conclude with the Our Father, Creed and invocations of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace and Mother of Mercy. Fulfil the usual plenary conditions.
  3. Elderly or sick people, their carers and those unable to leave home for a grave reason may instead unite spiritually with the jubilee celebrations, offering prayers, sufferings or difficulties to the merciful God, with detachment from sin and the intention to fulfil the usual conditions as soon as possible.

The work and its conditions

A plenary indulgence also requires complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, subject to the grant’s stated exceptions. The ordinary limit is one plenary indulgence per day.

Conditions common to every indulgence

The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.
