The prescribed work

  1. Make a pilgrimage to one of the five designated churches; there, attend jubilee rites or spend suitable time in meditation, prayer or Christian devotion.
  2. For the prayer alternative, intercede against current errors and for peace, Canada’s fidelity to its Christian vocation, priestly and religious vocations, and the family; conclude with the Our Father, Creed and invocations to Mary, Queen of Peace and Mother of Mercy.
  3. The archbishop also directs the 200th Anniversary Prayer, confession within 21 days and two prayers for the Pope’s intentions.
  4. Those impeded by old age or serious illness may unite spiritually, offering prayers and suffering; renounce sin and intend the usual conditions as soon as possible.
  5. The original rescript specifies the jubilee ending 8 December 2026. The pastoral summary says “throughout 2026”; confirm any later extension with the archdiocese.

The work and its conditions

A plenary indulgence also requires complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, subject to the grant’s stated exceptions. The ordinary limit is one plenary indulgence per day.

Conditions common to every indulgence

The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.
