The prescribed work

  1. Make or renew, even privately, the promise to observe the commitments of your state and its rule, constitutions or statutes.
  2. Fulfil the ordinary plenary conditions. The ritual specifies Creed and Our Father and Hail Mary, or another prayer, for the Pope’s intentions.

The work and its conditions

A plenary indulgence also requires complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, subject to the grant’s stated exceptions. The ordinary limit is one plenary indulgence per day.

Conditions common to every indulgence

The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.

Read the full conditions and norms. The cited grant and its specific provisions govern.

Read each branch with its own conditions. An editorial estimate is not a prescribed minimum.

Qualifying feast, anniversary or community occasion: promise renewal and prescribed prayers

Editorial estimate

About 3–7 minutes (editorial estimate)

No fixed minimum is prescribed. This estimate includes a simple private renewal, Creed, and Our Father and Hail Mary; the ritual permits another prayer for the Pope’s intentions. A longer chosen formula or actual rite takes longer. A chapter, assembly or visitation is a qualifying occasion; whole-event attendance by each member is not separately stated.

Timing sources
What the time estimate excludes
  • Ordinary travel to and from the venue, and waiting outside the prescribed work
  • Separate fulfillment of the usual plenary conditions, except prayers or Mass expressly included in the branch.

Occasion and source notes

Dates show customary Roman or proper religious-family celebrations. Follow lawful liturgical transfers and the grant’s own local calendar. Membership, place, frequency and other conditions remain necessary. Annunciation, St Joseph and Immaculate Conception use standard Roman transfer rules where listed. The applicable local or proper calendar, lawful external solemnity and any specific indult govern the actual observance.

The 2023 ritual lists Laici OAD personal occasions, community patron and General Assembly. The 2026 General Curia calendar expressly also includes them in the common General Chapter occasion and their own community’s notable-relic feast and canonical visitation. These clarifications follow that competent current calendar, while the state-specific promise and ordinary conditions remain required.

Prayer texts and resources

Follow the prayer count and formula specified in the requirements. The two Creed readers are alternatives.
