Discalced Augustinian Rituale (2023), §§242–243
Augustinian church visit: one yearly choice among the specified feasts
The currently promulgated ritual presents a plenary church-visit privilege once a year. Five clearly shared feast occasions are indexed as alternative dates for that one annual choice.
Time required Complete the devout church visit with the Our Father and Creed; no fixed number of minutes is stated.
- When
- Once each year on one qualifying feast: Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, Annunciation or Assumption; follow the church’s applicable liturgical calendar.
- Where
- Augustinian churches covered by the privilege stated in the Discalced Augustinian ritual; confirm the place and proper observance with the church.
- Who
- The faithful, including members of the Confraternity of the Cincture and those associated with it; §242 does not restrict this church-visit route to members.
- Application
- Self or the departed
The prescribed work
- Make a devout visit to an Augustinian church covered by the privilege on one of the supported feast occasions: Christmas, Easter (the Resurrection), Pentecost, the Annunciation or the Assumption.
- Recite the Our Father and the Creed during the visit, as the common norm for a plenary church visit prescribes.
- This concession may be used once in the year, choosing one qualifying occasion; the five listed feasts are alternatives, not five separate annual concessions.
- Fulfill the usual plenary conditions: complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion and prayer for the Pope’s intentions.
The work and its conditions
A plenary indulgence also requires complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, subject to the grant’s stated exceptions. The ordinary limit is one plenary indulgence per day.
Conditions common to every indulgence
The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.
Read the full conditions and norms. The cited grant and its specific provisions govern.
Time required
Read each branch with its own conditions. An editorial estimate is not a prescribed minimum.
Devout church visit with prescribed prayers
Duration varies
Duration varies; no numeric minimum prescribed
The grant concerns the completed devout visit and required prayers. The preceding-noon rule, where applicable, is a window in which to make that visit, not a minimum length of stay.
Timing sources
What the time estimate excludes
- Ordinary travel to and from the venue and waiting outside the prescribed work; an actual sacred pilgrimage remains part of the work when required.
- Separate fulfillment of the usual plenary conditions, except prayers expressly included in the branch.
Occasion and source notes
Documented availability in this library begins 22 May 2023. This marks the period supported by the reviewed evidence, not an independently established legal commencement date.
The calendar shows alternative dates for a single annual concession. For the qualifying dated church visit, the ordinary window opens at noon on the preceding day and ends at midnight at the end of the feast. Follow the proper Augustinian/local calendar, lawful transfers, access hours and any specific competent directions.
Current attestation is the Order’s ritual promulgated on 22 May 2023 as its editio typica, with this privilege presented in operative language. This is evidence of current institutional promulgation, not a claim that a new papal grant was issued in 2023. The full chain of historical confirmations has not been reconstructed. The summary’s Passion occasion and the historical text’s additional Our Lady of Consolation occasion remain outside these five indexed choices pending clarification. The library’s documented availability begins with this current promulgation; this evidence boundary is not asserted to be the original legal commencement.
Prayer texts and resources
