The prescribed work

  1. Attend with a penitential spirit.
  2. For plenary: attend all celebrations and fulfil the ordinary plenary conditions.

The work and its conditions

A plenary indulgence also requires complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, subject to the grant’s stated exceptions. The ordinary limit is one plenary indulgence per day.

Conditions common to every indulgence

The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.

Read the full conditions and norms. The cited grant and its specific provisions govern.

Time required

Read each branch with its own conditions. An editorial estimate is not a prescribed minimum.

Partial: participation on some days

Complete the prescribed event

Participation in a designated celebration; duration varies

No numeric minimum is prescribed. Attend the relevant celebration with a penitential spirit; an arbitrary short visit is not the named work.

Timing sources

Plenary: all designated triduum celebrations

Complete the prescribed event

All celebrations across the actual triduum schedule

No number of active minutes or continuous 72-hour attendance is prescribed. Attend all designated celebrations of the actual triduum; their lengths and timetable vary. The source does not add a separate every-minute attendance threshold.

Elapsed requirement Complete the full designated triduum, across its scheduled days; this is not continuous attendance for seventy-two hours.
