The prescribed work

  1. Be an eligible Catholic member of the Society of St Vincent de Paul; supporting its charitable work alone does not establish membership.
  2. On the formal admission day, complete actual admission; alternatively, participate in a qualifying Festival Meeting, which includes Mass and the meeting.
  3. Promise to observe the Society’s Rule faithfully.
  4. Fulfill the usual plenary conditions, including complete detachment from sin.

The work and its conditions

A plenary indulgence also requires complete detachment from every sin, sacramental confession, Holy Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions, subject to the grant’s stated exceptions. The ordinary limit is one plenary indulgence per day.

Conditions common to every indulgence

The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.

Read the full conditions and norms. The cited grant and its specific provisions govern.

Time required

Read each branch with its own conditions. An editorial estimate is not a prescribed minimum.

Qualifying Festival Meeting, including Mass, meeting and Rule promise

Complete the prescribed event

Participation in the actual Festival Meeting and Mass; duration varies

No fixed duration is prescribed. Attend the actual Festival Meeting with its Mass and meeting; estimating only the promise would omit the required event. The current directions do not state a separate every-minute attendance threshold.

Timing sources
What the time estimate excludes
  • Ordinary travel and waiting; a pilgrimage itself remains part of the work where required.
  • Separate fulfillment of the usual plenary conditions, except prayers or Mass expressly included in the branch.
  • Continuing charitable service and formation are membership context, not a new fixed duration for each qualifying event.

Occasion and source notes

A listed feast alone is insufficient: this route requires participation in the actual qualifying Festival Meeting and its Mass. Consult the Conference’s current schedule.

This entry follows the current competent national Manual and clarification. The original post-reform rescript was not recovered; broader historical privileges or other countries’ festival lists are not inferred.
