The work and its conditions

Conditions common to every indulgence

The person gaining an indulgence must be baptized, not excommunicated, and in the state of grace at least when the prescribed works are completed. There must be at least a general intention to gain indulgences, and the prescribed work must be performed at the time and in the manner required by the grant.

Read the full conditions and norms. The cited grant and its specific provisions govern.

Time required

Read each branch with its own conditions. An editorial estimate is not a prescribed minimum.

Editorial estimate

About 15–35 seconds to recite the two hymn stanzas

Editorial estimate for spoken recitation of the two hymn stanzas only, using the reader’s English 100–160 / Latin 80–140 words-per-minute convention. No fixed timed minimum is prescribed. The reader’s appended versicles and collect are not included; singing and devotional pauses may take longer. The hymn must be recited during the reposition after the Mass of the Lord’s Supper; allow for the scheduled liturgical context. A detached recitation does not fulfil this plenary route.

Timing sources
What the time estimate excludes
  • Ordinary travel to and from the venue, and waiting outside the prescribed work
  • Preparation and separately fulfilled sacramental conditions, except where the prescribed work itself includes Communion or a liturgical celebration

Occasion and source notes

Dates follow the General Roman Calendar. If the liturgical celebration or its external solemnity is legitimately transferred, follow the authorized observance (Norm 13).
